Catan

Catan (originally The Settlers of Catan) is a multiplayer strategy board game where players act as settlers competing to establish and develop colonies on a fictional island. Designed by Klaus Teuber and first published in Germany in 1995, it is considered a classic “gateway” game that popularized Eurogames outside of Europe.

The game centers on resource management, trading, and strategic building.
Objective: The first player to reach 10 victory points wins. Points are earned by building settlements (1 point), upgrading them to cities (2 points), having the “Longest Road” or “Largest Army,” or buying development cards.
The Board: The island is made of 19 hexagonal terrain tiles (hexes) surrounded by sea. Each hex—representing forests, hills, pastures, fields, or mountains—is assigned a number token from 2 to 12.
Resource Production: At the start of each turn, the active player rolls two 6-sided dice. Any hex matching the rolled number produces resources (lumber, brick, wool, grain, or ore) for any player with a settlement or city adjacent to it.
Trading: Players can trade resource cards with one another to get what they need for construction. Negotiation is a key social element of the game.
The Robber: Rolling a 7 activates the “Robber,” allowing the player to block a hex’s resource production and steal a card from an opponent.
