Catan Junior

Catan Junior is a pirate-themed adaptation of the classic strategy game Settlers of Catan, designed specifically to introduce younger children to resource management and strategic thinking. Instead of settling an island, 2 to 4 players take on the role of pirates building “lairs” and sailing ships across a ring of tropical islands.

Objective: Be the first player to build all seven pirate lairs to win the game.
Resources: Players collect five types of resources: Wood, Goats, Molasses, Cutlasses (swords), and Gold. These are used to build new ships, lairs, or to buy help from Coco the Parrot.
Dice Mechanics: A single six-sided die is used. Rolling numbers 1–5 generates resources for players with lairs on corresponding islands.
The Ghost Captain: Rolling a 6 moves the Ghost Captain (the junior version of the “Thief”). Unlike the original game, he doesn’t steal from players; instead, he blocks resource production on a specific island, and the player who moved him receives resources from the bank.
Trading: Trading is simplified, often done 1:1 with a central Marketplace on the board or the bank, rather than complex negotiations with other players.

Age Range: Officially recommended for ages 6 and up, though many families find it accessible for children as young as 5.
Play Time: Games typically last about 30 minutes, making it ideal for shorter attention spans.
No Reading Required: The game uses visual icons and tiles rather than text-heavy cards, allowing pre-readers to play independently once they learn the symbols.
Durable Components: The “Junior” edition uses thick die-cut resource tiles instead of paper cards, which are easier for small hands to manage and more resistant to wear.
