Description
Betrayal at House on the Hill is an immersive, horror-themed narrative board game where players explore a mysterious mansion that they build tile-by-tile. It is designed for 3–6 players aged 12 and up, with a typical playtime of about 60 minutes.
The game is famously split into two distinct stages:
Phase 1: Exploration: Players start as a cooperative team of explorers wandering through the house. As you move through doorways, you draw and place random room tiles, ensuring every game board is unique. During this time, you collect Items, face spooky Events, and discover Omens that boost or hinder your character’s four stats: Speed, Might, Sanity, and Knowledge.
Phase 2: The Haunt: When a player draws an Omen card, they must make a “Haunt roll”. If they fail, the Haunt begins, triggering one of 50 different scenarios based on which Omen and room were revealed. In most haunts, one player is revealed as a traitor who turns against the others, while the remaining players become “heroes”.
High Replayability: With 50 unique haunts—ranging from zombie invasions and mummies to being shrunk and chased by a cat—and a modular board, no two games are the same.
Asymmetric Objectives: Once the Haunt starts, the traitor and heroes separate to read different rulebooks (The Traitor’s Tome and Secrets of Survival) to learn their specific, secret victory conditions.
Story-Driven Experience: The game leans heavily into “B-movie” horror tropes and role-playing elements, focusing more on the narrative experience than perfectly balanced competitive strategy.
